Family Portrait Photography

Portraits are the pinnacle of experimentation. In the studio things are friendly, we’ll enjoy tea, a chat and experimentation. I’ll use different lighting setups to create variety in the shots. Photo shoots are personalised, including make-up artistry, hair styling and props (additional fees apply) etc. Portraits are ideal for those who enjoy posing and are quite relaxed, including individuals, couples, pets and children (ages 9 & up). Also this photo shoot is available for commissions/conceptual, fine art portraiture and dating profile photos.

I offer candid and fun family portraits, this captures lovely memories with a multi-light setup and a white backdrop.

How do I prepare for a portrait session?

Well-moisturised skin is highly recommended, also applying ChapStick a few days before your sessions. This is especially true if you have a darker skin type, as it helps with lighting. Brush your hair and bring the bring the brush along. Ironing your clothing is also helpful.

How do I prepare children for a portrait session?

Remember that during a session there is no rush, so don’t worry if they are a bit grumpy or if they aren’t behaving. Try to avoid asking them to smile or say cheese – genuine smiles come from children that are calm, relaxed and having fun! Please feel free to bring a favourite toy, a snack or drink, but avoid chocolate as it can be a bit messy.

What should I wear to a portrait session?

Wear something that you are very comfortable in and also defines your style, it shows in the photo.
If we are shooting in the studio on a white or grey backdrop, both cool and warm colours work well. On a black backdrop, darker colours help to emphasise your face more. With location photography wear cool colours in Spring/Summer (blue, beige, black etc) and warm colours (red, purple, pink, orange, green etc) in Autumn. Outfits such as dresses/skirts, jeans/khakis, jackets, darker trousers and fancy shirts, scarves and hats are work well. If you’re having a family portrait then a good rule is for parents to wear neutral colours and the kid’s bright colours. Avoid wearing matching outfits, such as jeans and white shirts or crazy patterns and strips.

When do you shoot on location portrait sessions?

Typically I shoot in the morning from 8:00 am – 11 am or until 12 if we’re shooting in a well-shaded area. The reason I do this is because this is when light is lovely, soft and flattering. If the day is overcast that is even better as it is like having a giant softbox in the sky. An overly bright light should always be avoided as they make for very unflattering images. The golden hour (1 hour before sunset) is also an option as you get lovely tones from the sunset.

Do you shoot photos in clients homes?

I do shoot in clients homes with a fill flash. However, the home would require a good quality of light via windows or skylights.

How much are additional digital images?

Digital images are sold in sets of 3, 5, 10 and 15 . Prices are £120 and up. If you have a specific number of images in mind it is better to include these with a portrait session as I offer a slight discount.

How much is retouching?

Retouching is £10 per image, but it depends on the requirements for the image. Please get in touch to discuss.

Can you arrange a make-up artist?

A make-up artist is available upon request for an additional £60. Advanced make-up techniques, including body paint is available, please get in touch for a quote.
